Experts will be at RTV6 Tuesday from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. to answer your questions about diabetes.
We're about an hour away from beginning our Q+A. Submit your questions any time, and we'll answer between 5:30 and 7.
If anyone has questions, start sending them in! I am ready to answer questions.
Diabetes is a common condition. In 2012, there were 29.1 million Americans (or 9.3% of the population) had diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is much more more common than type 1 diabetes. Approximately 1.25 million American children and adults have type 1 diabetes.
I can answer your questions about either Type 2 or Type 1 diabetes.
You can take the free Diabetes Risk Test (available in English or Spanish) by going to www.diabetes.org/takeitshareit or call 1-800-DIABETES
You can call 317-616-9006 to ask any diabetes-related questions. Or, type them in here and I can answer them.
Many people with Type 2 diabetes do not even know that they have it. Of the 29.1 million people with diabetes, 8.1 million were actually undiagnosed. So, if you are at risk for developing diabetes or have symptoms, it is important to be screened.
If there are any kids out there with Type 1 diabetes who are 7 to 16 years old, please consider attending diabetes camp this summer. It is a fun experience! The American Diabetes Association camp in Indiana is named Camp John Warvel, and it will be June 7th through June 13th. There are approximately 180 kids with type 1 diabetes that attend camp. It is like any other overnight camp, but all of the campers have type 1 diabetes. Many kids with type 1 diabetes have never met another child with diabetes; camp allows them to realize that there are many kids just like them. The camp is well staffed with doctors, nurses, and pharmacists. To get an application to attend camp, go to www.diabetes.org/adacampjohnwarvel
The percentage of Americans age 65 years and older with diabetes is almost 26% (or about 11.8 million seniors) - this includes both diagnosed and undiagnosed.
I have still have time to answer any questions. Anybody out there?
